Bear Essentials Program

Brainwave’s Bear Essentials Program supports families by providing care packs distributed through hospitals nationally. After being delivered the overwhelming news that your child will need to spend an extended period in the neurological ward, it helps to have some everyday essentials at hand. Each Bear Essentials Pack includes toiletries, practical items, and a little bit of love. Packs also contain a teddy bear, created in memory of an inspirational boy called Luke Ryan.

In 2016 Brainwave was thrilled to be approached by Smartways who wanted to help with our hospital program. Today Smartways sponsors production of the Brainwave Bear Essential Packs including packing, storing, and delivery to The Royal Children’s Hospital, Monash Children’s Hospital, Sydney Children’s Hospital, The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, Perth Children’s Hospital, Royal Hobart Hospital and the Adelaide Women and Children’s Hospital. This saves Brainwave time and money which allows us to concentrate on the important task of looking after over 900 families who have a child with a neurological condition.

At the point of diagnosis when your world is turned upside down… a random act of kindness can quickly bring a big smile to a child’s face

Catch-A-Break Program

Families often experience significant financial strain when faced with unexpected, ongoing costs associated with a child’s long-term hospital stay. Brainwave works in consultation with hospital social workers to ensure that disadvantaged families have access to urgent financial support. Brainwave assists with emergency accommodation for families traveling outside of metropolitan areas and meal and beverage vouchers.

Camp Brainwave

Brainwave’s Camps are run over one and two days for families who have a child with a brain illness or injury. The camps were developed as part of Brainwave’s Care Program. At Camp Brainwave, families enjoy games and activities for all ages and abilities. Families can reconnect in a safe, respectful, and supportive environment.

Family Days

For many of our Brainwave families, having a child with a serious brain illness can have a significant impact on the family unit. Common everyday activities like a family trip to the supermarket, park, or play centre can be out of reach, with one parent often staying at home to care for the unwell child. This can lead to the disruption of family relationships and social isolation for parents and siblings. Our social days allow families to engage in experiences together. In addition, there are opportunities for families to meet with others in similar situations and build key support networks.

Brainwave Christmas Parties

Our Christmas parties are a time for our communities to connect, celebrate, and make wonderful memories. Brainwave’s Christmas Parties are a special day out for families. Children can participate in a range of activities, including a Santa meet and greet, face painting, letter writing, photo opportunities, and rides. Brainwave’s Christmas parties bring families together to share in the magic of Christmas.

Kids and Sibs

Kids and Sibs is a popular Brainwave school holiday program. This unique event provides an opportunity for inclusive play between Brainwave children and their siblings. Kids and Sibs is an action-packed session where children of all abilities can bounce, climb, and swing in a safe and supported space.

The event encourages children to develop new friendships and draw inspiration from one another. Kids and Sibs is a hugely successful program and a favourite for many of our Brainwave families.
